Pneumonoultramicroscopicsilicovolcanocon

Everybody has a unique way of getting recognized. One of these people is Everett M. Smith in 1935. He coined the word pneumonoultramicroscopicsilicovolcanocon. As they say that the word is pronounced as NOO-muh-noh-UL-truh-MY-kruh-SKOP-ik-SIL-i-koh-VOL-kay-no-koh-NEE-o-sis and is a noun. It is a lung disease caused by inhaling minute particles of siliceous volcanic dust.

If you search all the well-known online and offline dictionaries, the word does not exist but it was recognized in 1935 as a 45 letter word by the New York Herald Tribune. Around 1939, Merriam-Webster New International Dictionary, Second Edition added it to their supplement. By the way, other spelling of pneumonoultramicroscopicsilicovolcanocon is pneumonoultramicroscopicsilicovolcanoconiosis.

So, is pneumonoultramicroscopicsilicovolcanocon a real word? To my own opinion, I say yes and no. Yes, during it’s time and no in the present times.
